Stress :: Quarter life crisis
If you fall into the 25-35 bracket you may be familiar to feelings of life inadequacy. If this sounds like you, you're not alone. Many young adults are now in a time of panic and self doubt as we're privileged with having so many choices in our lives we don't know which option to take.
According to Dr Oliver Robinson, a researcher at Greenwich University, people are experiencing the symptoms associated with a mid-life crisis earlier than before. Such symptoms include anxiety, depression and a sense of being trapped or 'locked into' a marriage or a job that doesn't feel right. Dr Robinson cites fluidity in formerly more rigid structures as the cause of the crisis. People change jobs more frequently, there are alternatives to marriage and we can choose to change our lives whenever we wish. This lack of structure in the modern world gives us more choice but also less security.
It's also pressure that's making us feel a sense of being 'lost', 'People are feeling a frenetic need to get a job, make money and be successful quickly,' said Dr Robinson. People in their 20s and 30s want it all, we're not happy with conventional life. But it's not all bad news: while the quarter-life crisis may mean you re-evaluate your life choices and can feel unsettled, experiencing it as a young adult will prevent you from feeling it later on so it's unlikely you'll suffer from a mid-life crisis.
And if you are feeling frustrated and lost, once you make positive changes Dr Robinson believes post crisis, your lifestyle will be 'intrinsically healthier than what you had before.'
